Senior Director, Government Services
Bhanu specializes in HPC hardware, software and scientific computing focusing on large-scale data analytics and informatics. He formerly served as lead scientist and adjunct faculty in the areas of bioinformatics, computational biology and HPC architecture design. Bhanu joined BioTeam in 2014, where he is using his expertise to enable next-generation knowledge discovery in life sciences.
Bhanu started his graduate career in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) department at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) where he received an MS in Electrical Engineering by researching ways of speeding up genomics and microarray analysis pipelines. He followed his MS by pursuing his PhD in Computer Engineering with a research focus in bioinformatics and computational biology, specifically researching proteomics using supercomputers. Bhanu pursued his postdoctoral research at the Joint Institute for Computational Sciences (JICS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) where he used the worlds fastest supercomputer, Jaguar, to solve large-scale data analytics needs for bioenergy projects along with building parallel bioinformatics applications and pipelines for characterizing and building novel protein domain models. He was later appointed as a research scientist to lead various systems biology efforts funded by multi-million dollar NSF project at JICS (UTK-ORNL) along with leading life sciences efforts. He was involved in various projects from NGS analysis to comparative genomics, structure prediction to drug discovery, and from scientific computing to HPC architecture design. He built peta-scale informatics applications on some of the world’s fastest supercomputers (Titan, Jaguar, and Kraken). He was instrumental in developing automated workflows, UIs, and Science Gateways that access supercomputers on the backend for large-scale computing and analytics. Bhanu served on many panels both for government and academic organizations along with holding adjunct faculty position in EECS department at UTK and Visiting Scientist at National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Bhanu brings to BioTeam his decades of unique expertise and experience to provide scientists with user-friendly platforms/infrastructures that can be used as a single-stop-shop for all their data analysis needs, so that researchers can publish and disseminate their data with ease for next-generation knowledge discovery in life sciences.
