Challenge
A rapidly expanding diagnostics company, focused on multi-omics diagnostics for cancer and other complex diseases, needed support to scale its rapid growth in a highly regulated market. This expansion generated a need to address bottlenecks in scientific computing and infrastructure scalability without sacrificing flexibility, thus ensuring rapid growth without incurring significant capital expenditures.
The initial phase required the establishment of high-performance computing (HPC)-ready development lifecycle environments. The client needed audit and compliance risk mitigation, as its existing infrastructure lacked controls for regulatory inspections. Additionally, the rapid growth had led to a lag in developing policies for cost management, permissions, and data governance.
The organization struggled with fragmented identity management, resulting in inconsistent and manual access provisioning for scientists and bioinformaticians, which hindered collaboration and raised security concerns. They also experienced slow time-to-experiment, as provisioning environments for new workflows or pipelines took weeks, thereby impeding innovation.
Approach
BioTeam conducted joint discovery sessions with science, IT, and compliance leaders to align technical architecture with regulatory and scientific priorities. Based on the recommendations from that session, BioTeam implemented a multi-account, cloud-based HPC framework with automation to rapidly scale compute resources. Existing identity systems were integrated with AWS for secure, auditable, single sign-on across teams. We developed training and documentation to empower internal teams to operate confidently. We also established continuous monitoring and logging for audit-ready transparency and proactive risk management.
Outcomes
BioTeam provided substantial value by:
- Accelerating time to market – Scientists gained faster access to scientific environments, reducing time-to-results for critical diagnostics.
- Improving audit confidence – Compliance and IT leaders could demonstrate traceability, access controls, and monitoring to regulators.
- Securing collaboration – Teams across research and clinical development shared data seamlessly without compromising PHI.
- Enhancing operational efficiency – Infrastructure-as-Code and automation reduced overhead and minimized misconfigurations.
- Building a future-proof foundation – A robust governance framework supports expansion into new assays, geographies, and partnerships.
