Federal Workshop to Build Sustainable Community Standards for FAIR Practices in Genomics Research

Summary

As a leader in genomics research, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) sought to develop actionable recommendations for increasing the accessibility and reusability of genomics data, with the support of the genomics community. A large-scale genomics repository and knowledgebase workshop brought together experts across the data lifecycle, from mouse models to human genomics, to tackle challenges in metadata standards, data processing, variant identifiers, and data curation. The workshop focused on improving sustainability and FAIR practices in genomics research. Researchers collaborated in small groups to develop actionable recommendations for the broader community.

Services Provided:

  • Workshop Design and Facilitation / Implementation
  • FAIR Data Management Assessment

Challenge

As a leading authority in genomics, genomics researchers look to NHGRI for guidelines on the most pressing challenges in genomics. NHGRI sought to create actionable recommendations for genomics researchers for some of their most persistent challenges in data interoperability, the long-term sustainability of repositories, and the establishment of consistent metadata and curation standards. Bringing together domain experts with varied backgrounds required precise coordination and a deep understanding of technical and scientific barriers.

Approach

BioTeam’s experts in genomics, data management, and workshop logistics led the workshop’s end-to-end planning and facilitation. This included designing the agenda, working closely with researchers to identify key issues, facilitating brainstorming sessions, transcribing and documenting discussions, and organizing the process of writing the community recommendations. Our dual capability in scientific knowledge and logistical planning enabled us to anticipate roadblocks, guide technical discussions, and ensure the workshop achieved its objectives.

Outcomes

  • Successfully facilitated a cross-disciplinary workshop with diverse stakeholders.
  • Delivered a comprehensive set of community-informed recommendations for improving data sustainability and FAIR practices.
  • Produced detailed documentation and summaries to support future implementation and outreach.
  • Strengthened community collaboration across domains of genomics research.
