A guest lecture for Computer Science students on "whatever I want to talk about"

17 Sep 2010 A guest lecture for Computer Science students on "whatever I want to talk about"

Prior to joining Bioteam, I worked with a computational biology group at the University of Minnesota. A friend from that time is now teaching a course in Bioinformatics in the Computer Science department at St. Thomas University. He offered the opportunity to deliver a guest lecture on “whatever I wanted to talk about.”

I broke it into four major parts:

  • Talking about me (obviously, it’s what we all do best)
  • DNA Sequencing
  • High Performance Computing (mostly pictures of my data storage adventures)
  • Career Advice

After the slides, we diverged into a bunch of interesting questions – ranging from “what’s the best preparation for a career in this field,” all the way to issues like GMO foods and privacy concerns in the post-genomic era. ┬áIt was a lot of fun!
